Good News Translation

‘When my father was about to die, he made me promise him that I would bury him in the tomb which he had prepared in the land of Canaan. So please let me go and bury my father, and then I will come back.’”

and was buried in the rock tomb which he had carved out for himself in David's City. They used spices and perfumed oils to prepare his body for burial, and they built a huge bonfire to mourn his death.

I know you are taking me off to my death, to the fate in store for everyone.

They shed your people's blood like water; blood flowed like water all through Jerusalem, and no one was left to bury the dead.

You will be afraid of high places, and walking will be dangerous. Your hair will turn white; you will hardly be able to drag yourself along, and all desire will be gone. We are going to our final resting place, and then there will be mourning in the streets.

Our bodies will return to the dust of the earth, and the breath of life will go back to God, who gave it to us.

We may have a hundred children and live a long time, but no matter how long we live, if we do not get our share of happiness and do not receive a decent burial, then I say that a baby born dead is better off.

“Who do you think you are? What right do you have to carve a tomb for yourself out of the rocky hillside?

and placed it in his own tomb, which he had just recently dug out of solid rock. Then he rolled a large stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away.

I will die in this land and never cross the river, but you are about to go across and occupy that fertile land.

Then Saul asked Jonathan, “What have you done?” Jonathan answered, “I ate a little honey with the stick I was holding. Here I am—I am ready to die.”
