Genesis 47:29

Good News Translation

When the time drew near for him to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “Place your hand between my thighs and make a solemn vow that you will not bury me in Egypt.

He said to his oldest servant, who was in charge of all that he had, “Place your hand between my thighs and make a vow.

Now, if you intend to fulfill your responsibility toward my master and treat him fairly, please tell me; if not, say so, and I will decide what to do.”

Isaac said, “You see that I am old and may die soon.

You will have to work hard and sweat to make the soil produce anything, until you go back to the soil from which you were formed. You were made from soil, and you will become soil again.”

Jacob answered, “My life of wandering has lasted a hundred and thirty years. Those years have been few and difficult, unlike the long years of my ancestors in their wanderings.”

Then Jacob said to Joseph, “As you see, I am about to die, but God will be with you and will take you back to the land of your ancestors.

So Jacob's sons did as he had commanded them;

‘When my father was about to die, he made me promise him that I would bury him in the tomb which he had prepared in the land of Canaan. So please let me go and bury my father, and then I will come back.’”

We will all die; we are like water spilled on the ground, which can't be gathered again. Even God does not bring the dead back to life, but the king can at least find a way to bring a man back from exile.

Joab and his men took Asahel's body and buried it in the family tomb at Bethlehem. Then they marched all night and at dawn arrived back at Hebron.

When you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will make one of your sons king and will keep his kingdom strong.

When David was about to die, he called his son Solomon and gave him his last instructions:

If a man dies, can he come back to life? But I will wait for better times, wait till this time of trouble is ended.

I know you are taking me off to my death, to the fate in store for everyone.

Human life is like forced army service, like a life of hard manual labor,

We can never redeem ourselves; we cannot pay God the price for our lives,

to keep us from the grave, to let us live forever.

In the world of the dead you are not remembered; no one can praise you there.

Who can live and never die? How can we humans keep ourselves from the grave?

Then the Lord said to Moses, “You do not have much longer to live. Call Joshua and bring him to the Tent, so that I may give him his instructions.” Moses and Joshua went to the Tent,

The Lord said to Moses, “You will soon die, and after your death the people will become unfaithful to me and break the covenant that I made with them. They will abandon me and worship the pagan gods of the land they are about to enter.

It was faith that made Joseph, when he was about to die, speak of the departure of the Israelites from Egypt, and leave instructions about what should be done with his body.

Everyone must die once, and after that be judged by God.

The men said to her, “May God take our lives if we don't do as we say! If you do not tell anyone what we have been doing, we promise you that when the Lord gives us this land, we will treat you well.”

“Now my time has come to die. Every one of you knows in his heart and soul that the Lord your God has given you all the good things that he promised. Every promise he made has been kept; not one has failed.

By the living Lord,” David continued, “I know that the Lord himself will kill Saul, either when his time comes to die a natural death or when he dies in battle.
