Genesis 32:6

Good News Translation

When the messengers came back to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and he is already on his way to meet you. He has four hundred men with him.”

Save me, I pray, from my brother Esau. I am afraid—afraid that he is coming to attack us and destroy us all, even the women and children.

Jacob was frightened and worried. He divided into two groups the people who were with him, and also his sheep, goats, cattle, and camels.

He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks the first group, the other may be able to escape.”

Jacob saw Esau coming with his four hundred men, so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two concubines.

Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.” But Jacob answered, “There is no need for that for I only want to gain your favor.”

Esau asked, “What about that other group I met? What did that mean?” Jacob answered, “It was to gain your favor.”

Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, “Do me this favor, and I will give you whatever you want.

They answered, “You have saved our lives; you have been good to us, sir, and we will be the king's slaves.”

It will be like someone who runs from a lion and meets a bear! Or like someone who comes home and puts his hand on the wall—only to be bitten by a snake!

Ruth answered, “You are very kind to me, sir. You have made me feel better by speaking gently to me, even though I am not the equal of one of your servants.”

One day Ruth said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields to gather the grain that the harvest workers leave. I am sure to find someone who will let me work with him.” Naomi answered, “Go ahead, daughter.”

“May you always think kindly of me,” she replied. Then she went away, ate some food, and was no longer sad.
