Jacob was in love with Rachel, so he said, “I will work seven years for you, if you will let me marry Rachel.”

Then Isaac brought Rebecca into the tent that his mother Sarah had lived in, and she became his wife. Isaac loved Rebecca, and so he was comforted for the loss of his mother.

Laban answered, “I would rather give her to you than to anyone else; stay here with me.”

Jacob worked seven years so that he could have Rachel, and the time seemed like only a few days to him, because he loved her.

And David also sent messengers to Ishbosheth to say, “Give me back my wife Michal. I paid a hundred Philistine foreskins in order to marry her.”

Our ancestor Jacob had to flee to Mesopotamia, where, in order to get a wife, he worked for another man and took care of his sheep.

So I paid fifteen pieces of silver and seven bushels of barley to buy her.
