Good News Translation

and sat down about a hundred yards away. She said to herself, “I can't bear to see my child die.” While she was sitting there, she began to cry.

When the water was all gone, she left the child under a bush

Esau continued to plead with his father: “Do you have only one blessing, father? Bless me too, father!” He began to cry.

Then he kissed her and began to cry for joy.

How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I cannot bear to see this disaster come upon my father.”

She answered, “By the living Lord your God I swear that I don't have any bread. All I have is a handful of flour in a bowl and a bit of olive oil in a jar. I came here to gather some firewood to take back home and prepare what little I have for my son and me. That will be our last meal, and then we will starve to death.”

The real mother, her heart full of love for her son, said to the king, “Please, Your Majesty, don't kill the child! Give it to her!” But the other woman said, “Don't give it to either of us; go on and cut it in two.”

How can I endure it if this disaster comes on my people, and my own relatives are killed?”

So the Lord answers, “Can a woman forget her own baby and not love the child she bore? Even if a mother should forget her child, I will never forget you.

The Lord says to his people, “Put on sackcloth and roll in ashes. Mourn with bitter tears as you would for an only child, because the one who comes to destroy you will suddenly attack.

I will turn your festivals into funerals and change your glad songs into cries of grief. I will make you shave your heads and wear sackcloth, and you will be like parents mourning for their only child. That day will be bitter to the end.

“I will fill the descendants of David and the other people of Jerusalem with the spirit of mercy and the spirit of prayer. They will look at the one whom they stabbed to death, and they will mourn for him like those who mourn for an only child. They will mourn bitterly, like those who have lost their first-born son.

So he got up and started back to his father. “He was still a long way from home when his father saw him; his heart was filled with pity, and he ran, threw his arms around his son, and kissed him.

When the angel had said this, all the people of Israel began to cry,

And may the Lord make it possible for each of you to marry again and have a home.” So Naomi kissed them good-bye. But they started crying

When David had finished speaking, Saul said, “Is that really you, David my son?” And he started crying.

David and his men started crying and did not stop until they were completely exhausted.
