Exodus 5:1

Good News Translation

Then Moses and Aaron went to the king of Egypt and said, “The Lord, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, so that they can hold a festival in the desert to honor me.’”

If you keep on refusing, then I will bring locusts into your country tomorrow.

Moses answered, “We will all go, including our children and our old people. We will take our sons and daughters, our sheep and goats, and our cattle, because we must hold a festival to honor the Lord.”

“My people will listen to what you say to them. Then you must go with the leaders of Israel to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has revealed himself to us. Now allow us to travel three days into the desert to offer sacrifices to the Lord, our God.’

Now if you are, tell me your plans, so that I may serve you and continue to please you. Remember also that you have chosen this nation to be your own.”

I told you to let my son go, so that he might worship me, but you refused. Now I am going to kill your first-born son.’”

“Go and tell the king of Egypt that he must let the Israelites leave his land.”

They were the men who told the king of Egypt to free the Israelites.

Then say to the king, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to tell you to let his people go, so that they can worship him in the desert. But until now you have not listened.

Tell Aaron everything I command you, and he will tell the king to let the Israelites leave his country.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the king and tell him that the Lord says, ‘Let my people go, so that they can worship me.

The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron to strike the ground with his stick, and all over the land of Egypt the dust will change into gnats.”

So Aaron struck the ground with his stick, and all the dust in Egypt was turned into gnats, which covered the people and the animals.

The Lord said to Moses, “Early tomorrow morning go and meet the king as he goes to the river, and tell him that the Lord says, ‘Let my people go, so that they can worship me.

We must travel three days into the desert to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, just as he commanded us.”

The Lord said to Moses, “Go to the king and tell him that the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says, ‘Let my people go, so that they may worship me.

If you again refuse to let them go,

Here on Mount Zion the Lord Almighty will prepare a banquet for all the nations of the world—a banquet of the richest food and the finest wine.

“But you, mortal man, must not be afraid of them or of anything they say. They will defy and despise you; it will be like living among scorpions. Still, don't be afraid of those rebels or of anything they say.

For my sake you will be brought to trial before rulers and kings, to tell the Good News to them and to the Gentiles.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather be afraid of God, who can destroy both body and soul in hell.

And now, Lord, take notice of the threats they have made, and allow us, your servants, to speak your message with all boldness.

Let us celebrate our Passover, then, not with bread having the old yeast of sin and wickedness, but with the bread that has no yeast, the bread of purity and truth.
