Good News Translation

“The king of Syria will plan an expedition, using his whole army. Then, in order to destroy his enemy's kingdom, he will make an alliance with him and offer him his daughter in marriage; but his plan will not succeed.

At that time King Hazael of Syria attacked the city of Gath and conquered it; then he decided to attack Jerusalem.

Jehoshaphat was frightened and prayed to the Lord for guidance. Then he gave orders for a fast to be observed throughout the country.

The day I call to you, my enemies will be turned back. I know this: God is on my side—

People may plan all kinds of things, but the Lord's will is going to be done.

Even the powerful army of the king of Egypt will not be able to help him fight when the Babylonians build earthworks and dig trenches in order to kill many people.

“Mortal man,” he said, “denounce the country of Ammon.

Take an iron pan and set it up like a wall between you and the city. Face the city. It is under siege, and you are the one besieging it. This will be a sign to the nation of Israel.

“Fix your eyes on the siege of Jerusalem. Shake your fist at the city and prophesy against it.

The king will return to the fortresses of his own land, but he will be defeated, and that will be the end of him.

And at the end of that time God's chosen leader will be killed unjustly. The city and the Temple will be destroyed by the invading army of a powerful ruler. The end will come like a flood, bringing the war and destruction which God has prepared.

“Their armies advance in violent conquest, and everyone is terrified as they approach. Their captives are as numerous as grains of sand.

“Anyone who is not for me is really against me; anyone who does not help me gather is really scattering.

“Anyone who is not for me is really against me; anyone who does not help me gather is really scattering.

As the time drew near when Jesus would be taken up to heaven, he made up his mind and set out on his way to Jerusalem.

In view of all this, what can we say? If God is for us, who can be against us?
