Amos 6:8

Good News Translation

The Sovereign Lord Almighty has given this solemn warning: “I hate the pride of the people of Israel; I despise their luxurious mansions. I will give their capital city and everything in it to the enemy.”

“I make a vow by my own name—the Lord is speaking—that I will richly bless you. Because you did this and did not keep back your only son from me,

So the Lord was angry with his people; he was disgusted with them.

He chose for us the land where we live, the proud possession of his people, whom he loves.

“If I were hungry, I would not ask you for food, for the world and everything in it is mine.

God was angry when he saw it, so he rejected his people completely.

To honor the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil ways and false words.

The kingdom of Israel is doomed! Its glory is fading like the crowns of flowers on the heads of its drunken leaders. Their proud heads are well perfumed, but there they lie, dead drunk.

My chosen people have turned against me; like a lion in the forest they have roared at me, and so I hate them.

Doomed is the one who says, “I will build myself a mansion with spacious rooms upstairs.” So he puts windows in his house, panels it with cedar, and paints it red.

But if you do not obey my commands, then I swear to you that this palace will fall into ruins. I, the Lord, have spoken.

But now listen to the vow that I, the Lord, have made in my mighty name to all you Israelites in Egypt: Never again will I let any of you use my name to make a vow by saying, ‘I swear by the living Sovereign Lord!’

I myself have sworn that the city of Bozrah will become a horrifying sight and a desert; people will make fun of it and use its name as a curse. All the nearby villages will be in ruins forever. I, the Lord, have spoken.”

The Lord Almighty has sworn by his own life that he will bring many men to attack Babylonia like a swarm of locusts, and they will shout with victory.

Like an enemy, the Lord has destroyed Israel; He has left her forts and palaces in ruins. He has brought on the people of Judah unending sorrow.

to give you Israelites this message: You are proud of the strength of the Temple. You like to look at it and to visit it, but the Lord is going to profane it. And the younger members of your families who are left in Jerusalem will be killed in war.

War will sweep through their cities and break down the city gates. It will destroy my people because they do what they themselves think best.

I will live among you in my sacred Tent, and I will never turn away from you.

I will destroy your places of worship on the hills, tear down your incense altars, and throw your dead bodies on your fallen idols. In utter disgust

The Lord says, “These people fill their mansions with things taken by crime and violence. They don't even know how to be honest.

And so an enemy will surround their land, destroy their defenses, and plunder their mansions.”

As the Sovereign Lord is holy, he has promised, “The days will come when they will drag you away with hooks; every one of you will be like a fish on a hook.

The Lord says, “I hate your religious festivals; I cannot stand them!

On that day the songs in the palace will become cries of mourning. There will be dead bodies everywhere. They will be cast out in silence.”

The Lord, the God of Israel, has sworn, “I will never forget their evil deeds.

I lost patience with three other shepherds, who hated me, and I got rid of them all in a single month.

“When the Lord saw this, he was angry and rejected his sons and daughters.
