But in their stomachs the food turns bitter, as bitter as any poison could be.

Judah, you have brought this on yourself by the way you have lived and by the things you have done. Your sin has caused this suffering; it has stabbed you through the heart.

So then, listen to what I, the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, will do: I will give my people bitter plants to eat and poison to drink.

The thought of my pain, my homelessness, is bitter poison.

He has shut me in a prison of misery and anguish.

Jesus said to them, “I am telling you the truth: everyone who sins is a slave of sin.

Get rid of all bitterness, passion, and anger. No more shouting or insults, no more hateful feelings of any sort.

For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, and wrong. We were slaves to passions and pleasures of all kinds. We spent our lives in malice and envy; others hated us and we hated them.

Guard against turning back from the grace of God. Let no one become like a bitter plant that grows up and causes many troubles with its poison.

They promise them freedom while they themselves are slaves of destructive habits—for we are slaves of anything that has conquered us.

God did not spare the angels who sinned, but threw them into hell, where they are kept chained in darkness, waiting for the Day of Judgment.
