“Do not spread false rumors, and do not help a guilty person by giving false testimony.

Then the priests and the prophets said to the leaders and to the people, “This man deserves to be sentenced to death because he has spoken against our city. You heard him with your own ears.”

But when I reached the Benjamin Gate, the officer in charge of the soldiers on duty there, a man by the name of Irijah, the son of Shelemiah and grandson of Hananiah, stopped me and said, “You are deserting to the Babylonians!”

and be put to death. Any Israelite or any foreigner living in Israel who curses the Lord shall be stoned to death by the whole community.

God gave the Law through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

People will do these things to you because they have not known either the Father or me.

We know that God spoke to Moses; as for that fellow, however, we do not even know where he comes from!”

For the Law of Moses has been read for a very long time in the synagogues every Sabbath, and his words are preached in every town.”

When they opposed him and said evil things about him, he protested by shaking the dust from his clothes and saying to them, “If you are lost, you yourselves must take the blame for it! I am not responsible. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”

“People of Israel!” they shouted. “Help! This is the man who goes everywhere teaching everyone against the people of Israel, the Law of Moses, and this Temple. And now he has even brought some Gentiles into the Temple and defiled this holy place!” (

to do them the favor of having Paul come to Jerusalem, for they had made a plot to kill him on the way.

When Paul arrived, the Jews who had come from Jerusalem stood around him and started making many serious charges against him, which they were not able to prove.

Many times I had them punished in the synagogues and tried to make them deny their faith. I was so furious with them that I even went to foreign cities to persecute them.

But the Spirit gave Stephen such wisdom that when he spoke, they could not refute him.

In this way they stirred up the people, the elders, and the teachers of the Law. They seized Stephen and took him before the Council.

Then they brought in some men to tell lies about him. “This man,” they said, “is always talking against our sacred Temple and the Law of Moses.

Why not say, then, “Let us do evil so that good may come”? Some people, indeed, have insulted me by accusing me of saying this very thing! They will be condemned, as they should be.

even though in the past I spoke evil of him and persecuted and insulted him. But God was merciful to me because I did not yet have faith and so did not know what I was doing.
