When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they started shouting in their own Lycaonian language, “The gods have become like men and have come down to us!”

I am not sending you to a nation that speaks a difficult foreign language, but to the Israelites.

“It isn't a man speaking, but a god!” they shouted.

They gave Barnabas the name Zeus, and Paul the name Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.

When the apostles learned about it, they fled to the cities of Lystra and Derbe in Lycaonia and to the surrounding territory.

They were waiting for him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after waiting for a long time and not seeing anything unusual happening to him, they changed their minds and said, “He is a god!”

and everyone in the city, from all classes of society, paid close attention to him. “He is that power of God known as ‘The Great Power,’” they said.
