Acts 13:22

Good News Translation

After removing him, God made David their king. This is what God said about him: ‘I have found that David son of Jesse is the kind of man I like, a man who will do all I want him to do.’

Then the men of Judah came to Hebron and anointed David as king of Judah. When David heard that the people of Jabesh in Gilead had buried Saul,

But I will not withdraw my support from him as I did from Saul, whom I removed so that you could be king.

“So tell my servant David that I, the Lord Almighty, say to him, ‘I took you from looking after sheep in the fields and made you the ruler of my people Israel.

He committed the same sins as his father and was not completely loyal to the Lord his God, as his great-grandfather David had been.

The Lord did this because David had done what pleased him and had never disobeyed any of his commands, except in the case of Uriah the Hittite.

Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He disobeyed the Lord's commands; he tried to find guidance by consulting the spirits of the dead

“On Zion, my sacred hill,” he says, “I have installed my king.”

In the same way I have made a covenant with my servant David that he would always have a descendant to be king, and I have made a covenant with the priests from the tribe of Levi that they would always serve me; and those covenants can never be broken.

And just as surely as I have done this, so I will maintain my covenant with Jacob's descendants and with my servant David. I will choose one of David's descendants to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will be merciful to my people and make them prosperous again.”

I will give them a king like my servant David to be their one shepherd, and he will take care of them.

But the time will come when the people of Israel will once again turn to the Lord their God and to a descendant of David their king. Then they will fear the Lord and will receive his good gifts.

For David served God's purposes in his own time, and then he died, was buried with his ancestors, and his body rotted in the grave.

And God, who knows the thoughts of everyone, showed his approval of the Gentiles by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he had to us.

He won God's favor and asked God to allow him to provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.

But if you continue to sin, you and your king will be destroyed.”

“I am sorry that I made Saul king; he has turned away from me and disobeyed my commands.” Samuel was angry, and all night long he pleaded with the Lord.

Rebellion against him is as bad as witchcraft, and arrogance is as sinful as idolatry. Because you rejected the Lord's command, he has rejected you as king.”

“I will not go back with you,” Samuel answered. “You rejected the Lord's command, and he has rejected you as king of Israel.”

Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you today and given it to someone who is a better man than you.

The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you go on grieving over Saul? I have rejected him as king of Israel. But now get some olive oil and go to Bethlehem, to a man named Jesse, because I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

Samuel took the olive oil and anointed David in front of his brothers. Immediately the spirit of the Lord took control of David and was with him from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

Samuel said, “Why do you call me when the Lord has abandoned you and become your enemy?

And that is how Saul, his three sons, and the young man died; all of Saul's men died that day.
