One day David asked, “Is there anyone left of Saul's family? If there is, I would like to show him kindness for Jonathan's sake.”

“I grieve for you, my brother Jonathan; how dear you were to me! How wonderful was your love for me, better even than the love of women.

But because of the sacred promise that he and Jonathan had made to each other, David spared Jonathan's son Mephibosheth, the grandson of Saul.

“Don't be afraid,” David replied. “I will be kind to you for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will give you back all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always be welcome at my table.”

The King will reply, ‘I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these followers of mine, you did it for me!’

I assure you that anyone who gives you a drink of water because you belong to me will certainly receive a reward.

To conclude: you must all have the same attitude and the same feelings; love one another, and be kind and humble with one another.

Then Jonathan said to David, “God be with you. The Lord will make sure that you and I, and your descendants and mine, will forever keep the sacred promise we have made to each other.” Then David left, and Jonathan went back to the town.
