Abishai son of Zeruiah spoke up: “Shimei should be put to death because he cursed the one whom the Lord chose as king.”

So David and his men continued along the road. Shimei kept up with them, walking on the hillside; he was cursing and throwing stones and dirt at them as he went.

When King David arrived at Bahurim, one of Saul's relatives, Shimei son of Gera, came out to meet him, cursing him as he came.

Abishai, whose mother was Zeruiah, said to the king, “Your Majesty, why do you let this dog curse you? Let me go over there and cut off his head!”

Bless our king, O God, the king you have chosen.

“Do not speak evil of God, and do not curse a leader of your people.

They captured the source of our life, the king the Lord had chosen, the one we had trusted to protect us from every invader.

and he said to his men, “May the Lord keep me from doing any harm to my master, whom the Lord chose as king! I must not harm him in the least, because he is the king chosen by the Lord!”

But David said, “You must not harm him! The Lord will certainly punish whoever harms his chosen king.
