Joab said to him, “If you see that the Syrians are defeating me, come and help me, and if the Ammonites are defeating you, I will go and help you.

But if he isn't pleased with me—well, then, let him do to me what he wishes.”

Be alert, stand firm in the faith, be brave, be strong.

Be determined and confident. Do not be afraid of them. Your God, the Lord himself, will be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you.”

Then Moses called Joshua and said to him in the presence of all the people of Israel, “Be determined and confident; you are the one who will lead these people to occupy the land that the Lord promised to their ancestors.

Through faith they fought whole countries and won. They did what was right and received what God had promised. They shut the mouths of lions,

Let us be bold, then, and say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?”

Whoever questions your authority or disobeys any of your orders will be put to death. Be determined and confident!”

Remember that I have commanded you to be determined and confident! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for I, the Lord your God, am with you wherever you go.”

But the people of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do whatever you like, but please, save us today.”

Then they called out to Jonathan and the young man, “Come on up here! We have something to tell you!” Jonathan said to the young man, “Follow me. The Lord has given Israel victory over them.”

Jonathan said to the young man, “Let's cross over to the camp of those heathen Philistines. Maybe the Lord will help us; if he does, nothing can keep him from giving us the victory, no matter how few of us there are.”

David said to Saul, “Your Majesty, no one should be afraid of this Philistine! I will go and fight him.”

So Samuel told him everything; he did not keep anything back. Eli said, “He is the Lord; he will do whatever seems best to him.”

Be brave, Philistines! Fight like men, or we will become slaves to the Hebrews, just as they were our slaves. So fight like men!”
