Good News Translation

“May no rain or dew fall on Gilboa's hills; may its fields be always barren! For the shields of the brave lie there in disgrace; the shield of Saul is no longer polished with oil.

The Philistines fought a battle against the Israelites on Mount Gilboa. Many Israelites were killed there, and the rest of them, including King Saul and his sons, fled.

The day after the battle the Philistines went to plunder the corpses, and they found the bodies of Saul and his sons lying on Mount Gilboa.

Your neck is like the tower of David, round and smooth, with a necklace like a thousand shields hung around it.

In the vision a banquet is ready; rugs are spread for the guests to sit on. They are eating and drinking. Suddenly the command rings out: “Officers! Prepare your shields!”

There is no grain or wine to offer in the Temple; the priests mourn because they have no offerings for the Lord.

Perhaps the Lord your God will change his mind and bless you with abundant crops. Then you can offer him grain and wine.

“Put a curse on Meroz,” says the angel of the Lord, “a curse, a curse on those who live there. They did not come to help the Lord, come as soldiers to fight for him.”

Then Samuel took a jar of olive oil and poured it on Saul's head, kissed him, and said, “The Lord anoints you as ruler of his people Israel. You will rule his people and protect them from all their enemies. And this is the proof to you that the Lord has chosen you to be the ruler of his people:
