Good News Translation

He placed the symbol of the goddess Asherah in the Temple, the place about which the Lord had said to David and his son Solomon: “Here in Jerusalem, in this Temple, is the place that I have chosen out of all the territory of the twelve tribes of Israel as the place where I am to be worshiped.

He removed from the Temple the symbol of the goddess Asherah, took it out of the city to Kidron Valley, burned it, pounded its ashes to dust, and scattered it over the public burying ground.

He removed from the Temple the foreign gods and the image that he had placed there, and the pagan altars that were on the hill where the Temple stood and in other places in Jerusalem; he took all these things outside the city and threw them away.

He placed an image in the Temple, the place about which God had said to David and his son Solomon: “Here in Jerusalem, in this Temple, is the place that I have chosen out of all the territory of the twelve tribes of Israel as the place where I am to be worshiped.

But now I have chosen Jerusalem as the place where I will be worshiped, and you, David, to rule my people.’”

the Lord appeared to him at night. He said to him, “I have heard your prayer, and I accept this Temple as the place where sacrifices are to be offered to me.

because I have chosen it and consecrated it as the place where I will be worshiped forever. I will watch over it and protect it for all time.

then I will remove you from the land that I gave you, and I will abandon this Temple that I have consecrated as the place where I am to be worshiped. People everywhere will ridicule it and treat it with contempt.

But then if you turn back to me and do what I have commanded you, I will bring you back to the place where I have chosen to be worshiped, even though you are scattered to the ends of the earth.’

Remember your people, whom you chose for yourself long ago, whom you brought out of slavery to be your own tribe. Remember Mount Zion, where once you lived.

They angered him with their heathen places of worship, and with their idols they made him furious.

They even placed their disgusting idols in the Temple built for my worship, and they have defiled it.

“The people of Judah have done an evil thing. They have placed their idols, which I hate, in my Temple and have defiled it.

And that is not all they did. They profaned my Temple and broke the Sabbath, which I had established.

“When you make an altar for the Lord your God, do not put beside it a wooden symbol of the goddess Asherah.
