2 Kings 19:4

Good News Translation

The Assyrian emperor has sent his chief official to insult the living God. May the Lord your God hear these insults and punish those who spoke them. So pray to God for those of our people who survive.”

Abraham named that place “The Lord Provides.” And even today people say, “On the Lord's mountain he provides.”

Perhaps the Lord will notice my misery and give me some blessings to take the place of his curse.”

In the fourteenth year of the reign of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib, the emperor of Assyria, attacked the fortified cities of Judah and conquered them.

Now, Lord, look at what is happening to us. Listen to all the things that Sennacherib is saying to insult you, the living God.

Whom do you think you have been insulting and ridiculing? You have been disrespectful to me, the holy God of Israel.

You sent your messengers to boast to me that with all your chariots you had conquered the highest mountains of Lebanon. You boasted that there you cut down the tallest cedars and the finest cypress trees and that you reached the deepest parts of the forests.

This is the message which he told them to give Isaiah: “Today is a day of suffering; we are being punished and are in disgrace. We are like a woman who is ready to give birth, but is too weak to do it.

Those in Judah who survive will flourish like plants that send roots deep into the ground and produce fruit.

There will be people in Jerusalem and on Mount Zion who will survive, because the Lord is determined to make this happen.

When Isaiah received King Hezekiah's message,

Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed to God and cried out to him for help.

Call to me when trouble comes; I will save you, and you will praise me.”

You have done all this, and I have said nothing, so you thought that I am like you. But now I reprimand you and make the matter plain to you.

But remember, O Lord, that your enemies laugh at you, that they are godless and despise you.

If the Lord Almighty had not let some of the people survive, Jerusalem would have been totally destroyed, just as Sodom and Gomorrah were.

I sent Assyria to attack a godless nation, people who have made me angry. I sent them to loot and steal and trample the people like dirt in the streets.”

So they must no longer use the words ‘the Lord's burden,’ because if any of them do, I will make my message a real burden to them. The people have perverted the words of their God, the living God, the Lord Almighty.

“Call to me, and I will answer you; I will tell you wonderful and marvelous things that you know nothing about.

I said to them, “The Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me with your request has said,

The Sovereign Lord says, “I will once again let the Israelites ask me for help, and I will let them increase in numbers like a flock of sheep.

It is the same way now: there is a small number left of those whom God has chosen because of his grace.

And Isaiah exclaims about Israel: “Even if the people of Israel are as many as the grains of sand by the sea, yet only a few of them will be saved;

The Lord will rescue his people when he sees that their strength is gone. He will have mercy on those who serve him, when he sees how helpless they are.

Now then, give me the hill country that the Lord promised me on that day when my men and I reported. We told you then that the race of giants called the Anakim were there in large walled cities. Maybe the Lord will be with me, and I will drive them out, just as the Lord said.”

As you advance, he will surely drive out the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. You will know that the living God is among you

Jonathan said to the young man, “Let's cross over to the camp of those heathen Philistines. Maybe the Lord will help us; if he does, nothing can keep him from giving us the victory, no matter how few of us there are.”

Here and now I challenge the Israelite army. I dare you to pick someone to fight me!”

David asked the men who were near him, “What will the man get who kills this Philistine and frees Israel from this disgrace? After all, who is this heathen Philistine to defy the army of the living God?”

David answered, “You are coming against me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the Israelite armies, which you have defied.
