They built places of worship for false gods and put up stone pillars and symbols of Asherah to worship on the hills and under shady trees.

At the pagan places of worship, on the hills, and under every shady tree, Ahaz offered sacrifices and burned incense.

and they burned incense on all the pagan altars, following the practice of the people whom the Lord had driven out of the land. They aroused the Lord's anger with all their wicked deeds

Do not make any treaties with the people of the country into which you are going, because this could be a fatal trap for you.

Instead, tear down their altars, destroy their sacred pillars, and cut down their symbols of the goddess Asherah.

Their land is full of idols, and they worship objects that they have made with their own hands.

You worship the fertility gods by having sex under those sacred trees of yours. You offer your children as sacrifices in the rocky caves near stream beds.

When Josiah was king, the Lord said to me, “Have you seen what Israel, that unfaithful woman, has done? She has turned away from me, and on every high hill and under every green tree she has acted like a prostitute.

I brought them to the land I had promised to give them. When they saw the high hills and green trees, they offered sacrifices at all of them. They made me angry by the sacrifices they burned and by the wine they brought as offerings.

The Lord said, “Do not make idols or set up statues, stone pillars, or carved stones to worship. I am the Lord your God.

I will pull down the images of the goddess Asherah in your land and destroy your cities.

“When you make an altar for the Lord your God, do not put beside it a wooden symbol of the goddess Asherah.

And do not set up any stone pillar for idol worship; the Lord hates them.
