Good News Translation

Saul answered, “I have done wrong. Come back, David, my son! I will never harm you again, because you have spared my life tonight. I have been a fool! I have done a terrible thing!”

Once more the king sent an officer with fifty men. He went up the hill, fell on his knees in front of Elijah, and pleaded, “Man of God, be merciful to me and my men. Spare our lives!

“I have sinned by betraying an innocent man to death!” he said. “What do we care about that?” they answered. “That is your business!”

“That was a foolish thing to do,” Samuel answered. “You have not obeyed the command the Lord your God gave you. If you had obeyed, he would have let you and your descendants rule over Israel forever.

“Yes, I have sinned,” Saul replied. “I disobeyed the Lord's command and your instructions. I was afraid of my men and did what they wanted.

“I have sinned,” Saul replied. “But at least show me respect in front of the leaders of my people and all of Israel. Go back with me so that I can worship the Lord your God.”

The Philistine armies would come and fight, but in every battle David was more successful than any of Saul's other officers. As a result David became very famous.

Then he said to David, “You are right, and I am wrong. You have been so good to me, while I have done such wrong to you!

David replied, “Here is your spear, Your Majesty. Let one of your men come over and get it.

Just as I have spared your life today, may the Lord do the same to me and free me from all troubles!”

When Saul heard that David had fled to Gath, he gave up trying to find him.
