Good News Translation

Then King Solomon said to Abiathar the priest, “Go to your country home in Anathoth. You deserve to die, but I will not have you put to death now, for you were in charge of the Lord's Covenant Box while you were with my father David, and you shared in all his troubles.”

David became very angry at the rich man and said, “I swear by the living Lord that the man who did this ought to die!

This very day he has gone and offered a sacrifice of many bulls, sheep, and fattened calves. He invited all your sons, Joab the commander of your army, and Abiathar the priest, and right now they are feasting with him and shouting, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’

He talked with Joab (whose mother was Zeruiah) and with Abiathar the priest, and they agreed to support his cause.

The king made Benaiah commander of the army in Joab's place and put Zadok the priest in Abiathar's place.

Shout, people of Gallim! Listen, people of Laishah! Answer, people of Anathoth!

This book is the account of what was said by Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests of the town of Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.

You can be sure that whoever gives even a drink of cold water to one of the least of these my followers because he is my follower, will certainly receive a reward.”

“You have stayed with me all through my trials;

Did all your experience mean nothing at all? Surely it meant something!

Anathoth, and Almon, with their pasture lands.

You will be troubled and look with envy on all the blessings I will give to the other people of Israel, but no one in your family will ever again live to old age.

You failed in your duty, Abner! I swear by the living Lord that all of you deserve to die, because you have not protected your master, whom the Lord made king. Look! Where is the king's spear? Where is the water jar that was right by his head?”
