Why are you so far away, O Lord? Why do you hide yourself when we are in trouble?

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I have cried desperately for help, but still it does not come.

Don't hide yourself from me! Don't be angry with me; don't turn your servant away. You have been my help; don't leave me, don't abandon me, O God, my savior.

You are Israel's only hope; you are the one who saves us from disaster. Why are you like a stranger in our land, like a traveler who stays for only one night?

Why do you reject me, Lord? Why do you turn away from me?

God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.

Why are you hiding from us? Don't forget our suffering and trouble!

You were good to me, Lord; you protected me like a mountain fortress. But then you hid yourself from me, and I was afraid.

Why do you avoid me? Why do you treat me like an enemy?

If God decided to do nothing at all, no one could criticize him. If he hid his face, we would be helpless.

God has been at work in the North and the South, but still I have not seen him.

We fall crushed to the ground; we lie defeated in the dust.

Why are you like someone taken by surprise, like a soldier powerless to help? Surely, Lord, you are with us! We are your people; do not abandon us.’”
