But if you do not keep your promise, I warn you that you will be sinning against the Lord. Make no mistake about it; you will be punished for your sin.

“Lord, our crimes against you are many. Our sins accuse us. We are well aware of them all.

Trouble follows sinners everywhere, but righteous people will be rewarded with good things.

“What can we say to you, sir?” Judah answered. “How can we argue? How can we clear ourselves? God has uncovered our guilt. All of us are now your slaves and not just the one with whom the cup was found.”

You place our sins before you, our secret sins where you can see them.

So you should not pass judgment on anyone before the right time comes. Final judgment must wait until the Lord comes; he will bring to light the dark secrets and expose the hidden purposes of people's minds. And then all will receive from God the praise they deserve.

If you had done the right thing, you would be smiling; but because you have done evil, sin is crouching at your door. It wants to rule you, but you must overcome it.”

There will be suffering and pain for all those who do what is evil, for the Jews first and also for the Gentiles.

But evil people are doomed; what they have done to others will now be done to them.

May those who accuse others falsely not succeed; may evil overtake violent people and destroy them.

I could ask the darkness to hide me or the light around me to turn into night,

whose people were wicked and sinned against the Lord.

No matter how often honest people fall, they always get up again; but disaster destroys the wicked.
