The next day the whole community complained against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have killed some of the Lord's people.”

When God said that he would destroy his people, his chosen servant, Moses, stood up against God and kept his anger from destroying them.

They complained against Moses and Aaron, and said, “It would have been better to die in Egypt or even here in the wilderness!

“People of Israel!” they shouted. “Help! This is the man who goes everywhere teaching everyone against the people of Israel, the Law of Moses, and this Temple. And now he has even brought some Gentiles into the Temple and defiled this holy place!” (

“We gave you strict orders not to teach in the name of this man,” he said; “but see what you have done! You have spread your teaching all over Jerusalem, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”

“Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are my followers.

Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, then sent a report to King Jeroboam of Israel: “Amos is plotting against you among the people. His speeches will destroy the country.

Your enemies do not know that you will punish them. Lord, put them to shame and let them suffer; let them suffer the punishment you have prepared. Show them how much you love your people.

But they quickly forgot what he had done and acted without waiting for his advice.

When Ahab saw him, he said, “So there you are—the worst troublemaker in Israel!”

We are honored and disgraced; we are insulted and praised. We are treated as liars, yet we speak the truth;

Baruch son of Neriah has stirred you up against us, so that the Babylonians will gain power over us and can either kill us or take us away to Babylonia.”

Then the officials went to the king and said, “This man must be put to death. By talking like this he is making the soldiers in the city lose their courage, and he is doing the same thing to everyone else left in the city. He is not trying to help the people; he only wants to hurt them.”

We must not complain, as some of them did—and they were destroyed by the Angel of Death.

These people are always grumbling and blaming others; they follow their own evil desires; they brag about themselves and flatter others in order to get their own way.
