Jesus answered, “But the scripture also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

“Do not put the Lord your God to the test, as you did at Massah.

We must not put the Lord to the test, as some of them did—and they were killed by snakes.

They deliberately put God to the test by demanding the food they wanted.

Again and again they put God to the test and brought pain to the Holy God of Israel.

There they put me to the test and tried me, says God, although they had seen what I did for forty years.

The place was named Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites complained and put the Lord to the test when they asked, “Is the Lord with us or not?”

But they rebelled against Almighty God and put him to the test. They did not obey his commandments,

none of these people will live to enter that land. They have seen the dazzling light of my presence and the miracles that I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, but they have tried my patience over and over again and have refused to obey me.

But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Human beings cannot live on bread alone, but need every word that God speaks.’”

You are to answer them, “Listen to what the Lord is teaching you! Don't listen to mediums—what they tell you cannot keep trouble away.”

Then Jesus answered, “Go away, Satan! The scripture says, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!’”

Jesus said to them, “Haven't you ever read what the Scriptures say? ‘The stone which the builders rejected as worthless turned out to be the most important of all. This was done by the Lord; what a wonderful sight it is!’

So they asked Jesus, “Do you hear what they are saying?” “Indeed I do,” answered Jesus. “Haven't you ever read this scripture? ‘You have trained children and babies to offer perfect praise.’”

But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

So then, why do you now want to put God to the test by laying a load on the backs of the believers which neither our ancestors nor we ourselves were able to carry?
