He saw a fig tree by the side of the road and went to it, but found nothing on it except leaves. So he said to the tree, “You will never again bear fruit!” At once the fig tree dried up.

They claim that they know God, but their actions deny it. They are hateful and disobedient, not fit to do anything good.

Those who do not remain in me are thrown out like a branch and dry up; such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, where they are burned.

They are like trees that bear no fruit, even in autumn, trees that have been pulled up by the roots and are completely dead.

He dug the soil and cleared it of stones; he planted the finest vines. He built a tower to guard them, dug a pit for treading the grapes. He waited for the grapes to ripen, but every grape was sour.

The disciples saw this and were astounded. “How did the fig tree dry up so quickly?” they asked.

Early next morning, as they walked along the road, they saw the fig tree. It was dead all the way down to its roots.
