“Father,” he prayed, “my Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want.”

To show that you are his children, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who cries out, “Father, my Father.”

He was humble and walked the path of obedience all the way to death— his death on the cross.

Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back in its place! Do you think that I will not drink the cup of suffering which my Father has given me?”

Jesus looked straight at them and answered, “This is impossible for human beings but not for God; everything is possible for God.”

“My food,” Jesus said to them, “is to obey the will of the one who sent me and to finish the work he gave me to do.

He went a little farther on, threw himself face downward on the ground, and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering from me! Yet not what I want, but what you want.”

This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven: May your holy name be honored;

“I am the Lord, the God of all people. Nothing is too difficult for me.

How I love to do your will, my God! I keep your teaching in my heart.”

Is anything too hard for the Lord? As I said, nine months from now I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”

There are these two things, then, that cannot change and about which God cannot lie. So we who have found safety with him are greatly encouraged to hold firmly to the hope placed before us.

Once more Jesus went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup of suffering cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.”

Then he returned and found the three disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Weren't you able to stay awake for even one hour?”

“We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink the cup I must drink and be baptized in the way I must be baptized.
