Good News Translation (US Version)

Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David.

The Lord says, “Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are one of the smallest towns in Judah, but out of you I will bring a ruler for Israel, whose family line goes back to ancient times.”

The scripture says that the Messiah will be a descendant of King David and will be born in Bethlehem, the town where David lived.”

The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you go on grieving over Saul? I have rejected him as king of Israel. But now get some olive oil and go to Bethlehem, to a man named Jesse, because I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

Then Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath he went as usual to the synagogue. He stood up to read the Scriptures

and made his home in a town named Nazareth. And so what the prophets had said came true: “He will be called a Nazarene.”

The leaders and the others said, “Yes, we are witnesses. May the Lord make your wife become like Rachel and Leah, who bore many children to Jacob. May you become rich in the clan of Ephrath and famous in Bethlehem.

Some time later Boaz himself arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the workers. “The Lord be with you!” he said. “The Lord bless you!” they answered.

“Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” answered Philip.

Saul asked him, “Young man, whose son are you?” “I am the son of your servant Jesse from Bethlehem,” David answered.

David was the son of Jesse, who was an Ephrathite from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons, and at the time Saul was king, he was already a very old man.

Samuel did what the Lord told him to do and went to Bethlehem, where the city leaders came trembling to meet him and asked, “Is this a peaceful visit, seer?”

They went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived, the whole town became excited, and the women there exclaimed, “Is this really Naomi?”

I am doing this because of your mother Rachel. To my great sorrow she died in the land of Canaan, not far from Ephrath, as I was returning from Mesopotamia. I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath.” (Ephrath is now known as Bethlehem.)

When Rachel died, she was buried beside the road to Ephrath, now known as Bethlehem.

While he was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived.

Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own hometown.

He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. She was pregnant,
