The border then went to the slope on the south side of Luz (also called Bethel), then down to Ataroth Addar, on the mountain south of Lower Beth Horon.

He named the place Bethel. (The town there was once known as Luz.)

Ahithophel was adviser to the king, and Hushai the Archite was the king's friend and counselor.

When Hushai, David's trusted friend, met Absalom, he shouted, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”

When David reached the top of the hill, where there was a place of worship, his trusted friend Hushai the Archite met him with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.

The territory which they took and settled included Bethel and the towns around it, as far east as Naaran and as far west as Gezer and the towns around it. It also included the cities of Shechem and Ayyah, and the towns around them.

So Hushai, David's friend, returned to the city just as Absalom was arriving.
