Jacob continued, “Joseph, your two sons, who were born to you in Egypt before I came here, belong to me; Ephraim and Manasseh are just as much my sons as Reuben and Simeon.

In Egypt Joseph had two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, by Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, a priest in Heliopolis.

I will be your father, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

Now then, divide this land among the other nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh, for them to possess as their own.”

God had already decided that through Jesus Christ he would make us his children—this was his pleasure and purpose.

“They will be my people,” says the Lord Almighty. “On the day when I act, they will be my very own. I will be merciful to them as parents are merciful to the children who serve them.

“As I passed by again, I saw that the time had come for you to fall in love. I covered your naked body with my coat and promised to love you. Yes, I made a marriage covenant with you, and you became mine.” This is what the Sovereign Lord says.

Israel, the Lord who created you says, “Do not be afraid—I will save you. I have called you by name—you are mine.

You shall be holy and belong only to me, because I am the Lord and I am holy. I have set you apart from the other nations so that you would belong to me alone.

It was faith that made Jacob bless each of the sons of Joseph just before he died. He leaned on the top of his walking stick and worshiped God.

Some time later Joseph was told that his father was ill. So he took his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, and went to see Jacob.

If you have any more sons, they will not be considered mine; the inheritance they get will come through Ephraim and Manasseh.

The Sovereign Lord said, “These are the boundaries of the land that is to be divided among the twelve tribes, with the tribe of Joseph receiving two sections.

When the waters saw you, O God, they were afraid, and the depths of the sea trembled.
