Then there was a famine all over Egypt and Canaan, which caused much suffering. Our ancestors could not find any food,

People came to Egypt from all over the world to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was severe everywhere.

But there was a famine in Canaan, and it was so bad that Abram went farther south to Egypt, to live there for a while.

There was another famine in the land besides the earlier one during the time of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, at Gerar.

One of them, named Agabus, stood up and by the power of the Spirit predicted that a severe famine was about to come over all the earth. (It came when Claudius was emperor.)

During David's reign there was a severe famine which lasted for three full years. So David consulted the Lord about it, and the Lord said, “Saul and his family are guilty of murder; he put the people of Gibeon to death.” (

and the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in every other country, but there was food throughout Egypt.
