But I will not withdraw my support from him as I did from Saul, whom I removed so that you could be king.

Rebellion against him is as bad as witchcraft, and arrogance is as sinful as idolatry. Because you rejected the Lord's command, he has rejected you as king.”

I will always keep my promise to him, and my covenant with him will last forever.

Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you today and given it to someone who is a better man than you.

His royal power will continue to grow; his kingdom will always be at peace. He will rule as King David's successor, basing his power on right and justice, from now until the end of time. The Lord Almighty is determined to do all this.

And I will not take the whole kingdom away from him; instead, I will leave him one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have made my own.”

I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him as a father punishes his son.

The Lord's spirit left Saul, and an evil spirit sent by the Lord tormented him.

I will defend this city and protect it, for the sake of my own honor and because of the promise I made to my servant David.’”

I will not break my covenant with him or take back even one promise I made him.

You will always have descendants, and I will make your kingdom last forever. Your dynasty will never end.’”

“Listen now, my people, and come to me; come to me, and you will have life! I will make a lasting covenant with you and give you the blessings I promised to David.

He took off his clothes and danced and shouted in Samuel's presence, and lay naked all that day and all that night. (This is how the saying originated, “Has even Saul become a prophet?”)

But I will not stop loving David or fail to keep my promise to him.

Lord, where are the former proofs of your love? Where are the promises you made to David?

“I will not go back with you,” Samuel answered. “You rejected the Lord's command, and he has rejected you as king of Israel.”
