Good News Translation (US Version)

So King Joram and the kings of Judah and Edom set out. After marching seven days, they ran out of water, and there was none left for the men or the pack animals.

The land of Edom had no king; it was ruled by a deputy appointed by the king of Judah.

Tell them to throw him in prison and to put him on bread and water until I return safely.”

The whole Israelite community left the desert of Sin, moving from one place to another at the command of the Lord. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water there to drink.

Then Moses led the people of Israel away from the Red Sea into the desert of Shur. For three days they walked through the desert, but found no water.

Moses concluded by saying, “All your officials will come to me and bow down before me, and they will beg me to take all my people and go away. After that, I will leave.” Then in great anger Moses left the king.

In the eighteenth year of the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, Joram son of Ahab became king of Israel, and he ruled in Samaria for twelve years.

He sent word to King Jehoshaphat of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me; will you join me in war against him?” “I will,” King Jehoshaphat replied. “I am at your disposal, and so are my men and my horses.

What route shall we take for the attack?” “We will go the long way through the wilderness of Edom,” Joram answered.

“We're done for!” King Joram exclaimed. “The Lord has put the three of us at the mercy of the king of Moab!”

During Jehoram's reign Edom revolted against Judah and became an independent kingdom.

King Jehoshaphat had ocean-going ships built to sail to the land of Ophir for gold; but they were wrecked at Eziongeber and never sailed.
