and now you have him to lead you. As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons are with you. I have been your leader from my youth until now.

and said to him, “Look, you are getting old and your sons don't follow your example. So then, appoint a king to rule over us, so that we will have a king, as other countries have.”

so that we will be like other nations, with our own king to rule us and to lead us out to war and to fight our battles.”

When Samuel grew old, he made his sons judges in Israel.

But they did not follow their father's example; they were interested only in making money, so they accepted bribes and did not decide cases honestly.

and can command them in battle, so that your community will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

I know that I shall soon put off this mortal body, as our Lord Jesus Christ plainly told me.

As for me, the hour has come for me to be sacrificed; the time is here for me to leave this life.

Now that I am old and my hair is gray, do not abandon me, O God! Be with me while I proclaim your power and might to all generations to come.

Eli called him, “Samuel, my boy!” “Yes, sir,” answered Samuel.

I have already told him that I am going to punish his family forever because his sons have spoken evil things against me. Eli knew they were doing this, but he did not stop them.

Why, then, do you look with greed at the sacrifices and offerings which I require from my people? Why, Eli, do you honor your sons more than me by letting them fatten themselves on the best parts of all the sacrifices my people offer to me?

Eli was now very old. He kept hearing about everything his sons were doing to the Israelites and that they were even sleeping with the women who worked at the entrance to the Tent of the Lord's presence.

The Lord came and stood there, and called as he had before, “Samuel! Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak; your servant is listening.”

Much later the Lord gave Israel security from their enemies around them. By that time Joshua was very old,

so he called all Israel, the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of the people, and said, “I am very old now.
