Jeroboam appointed a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, just like the festival in Judah. He went to the altar in Bethel to sacrifice to the calves he had made. He appointed priests from the illegal worship sites ⌞to serve⌟ in Bethel.

But God says to wicked people, “How dare you quote my decrees and mouth my promises!

Why do you brag about the evil you’ve done, you hero? The mercy of God lasts all day long!

No, you invent new crimes on earth, and your hands spread violence.

God takes his place in his own assembly. He pronounces judgment among the gods:

I saw something else under the sun: There is wickedness where justice should be found. There is wickedness where righteousness should be found.

Don’t be surprised if you see poor people being oppressed, denied justice, or denied their rights in any district. One authority is watching over another, and they both have authorities watching over them.

How horrible it will be for those who make unjust laws and who make oppressive regulations.

How horrible it will be for those who think that a day of disaster is far away. They bring the reign of violence closer.

You have kept Omri’s laws and all the practices of the descendants of Ahab, and you have followed their advice. That is why I will ruin you. Your people will be ridiculed. You will bear the disgrace of my people.”

(The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that whoever knew where Jesus was should tell them so that they could arrest him.)

Early in the morning, Jesus was taken from Caiaphas’ house to the governor’s palace. The Jews wouldn’t go into the palace. They didn’t want to become unclean, since they wanted to eat the Passover.

(His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. The Jews had already agreed to put anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ out of the synagogue.
