Answer me quickly, O Lord. My spirit is worn out. Do not hide your face from me, or I will be like those who go into the pit.

O Lord, I call to you. O my rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. If you remain silent, I will be like those who go into the pit.

“How will you profit if my blood is shed, if I go into the pit? Will the dust ⌞of my body⌟ give thanks to you? Will it tell about your truth?”

I have faded from memory as if I were dead and have become like a piece of broken pottery.

He was despised and rejected by people. He was a man of sorrows, familiar with suffering. He was despised like one from whom people turn their faces, and we didn’t consider him to be worth anything.

He has filled me with bitterness. He has made me drink wormwood.

I will bring you down with those who descend to the grave to join the people of long ago. I will make you live below the earth among the ancient ruins with those who go down to the grave. You will never return or take your place in the land of the living.

I sank to the foot of the mountains. I sank to the bottom, where bars held me forever. But you brought me back from the pit, O Lord, my God.

Look at it this way: At the right time, while we were still helpless, Christ died for ungodly people.

In fact, we still feel as if we’re under a death sentence. But we suffered so that we would stop trusting ourselves and learn to trust God, who brings the dead back to life.

He was weak when he was crucified, but by God’s power he lives. We are weak with him, but by God’s power we will live for you with his help.
