But they refused to listen. They became as impossible to deal with as their ancestors who refused to trust the Lord their God.

Don’t be like your ancestors and your relatives who were unfaithful to the Lord God of their ancestors. He made them something that shocks people, as you have seen.

“If you want to set your heart right, then pray to him.

When our ancestors were in Egypt, they gave no thought to your miracles. They did not remember your numerous acts of mercy, so they rebelled at the sea, the Red Sea.

God places lonely people in families. He leads prisoners out of prison into productive lives, but rebellious people must live in an unproductive land.

Their hearts were not loyal to him. They were not faithful to his promise.

How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness! How often they caused him grief in the desert!

They tested God Most High and rebelled against him. They did not obey his written instructions.

The Lord added, “I’ve seen these people, and they are impossible to deal with.

Go to that land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not be with you, because you are impossible to deal with, and I would destroy you on the way.”

The Lord had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are impossible to deal with. If I were with you, I might destroy you at any time. Now take off your jewelry, and I’ll decide what to do with you.’ ”

Then he said, “Lord, please go with us! Even though we are impossible to deal with, forgive our sin and the wrong we have done, and accept us as your own people.”

These people are rebellious and deceitful children, children who refuse to listen to the Lord’s teachings.

I said to their children in the desert, “Don’t live by the laws of your ancestors. Don’t obey their rules or dishonor yourselves with their disgusting idols.

“ ‘But they rebelled against me and refused to listen to me. Not one of them got rid of the detestable idols that they looked to for help. They didn’t abandon the disgusting idols of Egypt. So I was going to pour out my fury on them and unleash my anger on them in Egypt.

When he arrived there, he was pleased to see what God had done for them out of kindness. So he encouraged all the people to remain solidly committed to the Lord.

“How stubborn can you be? How can you be so heartless and disobedient? You’re just like your ancestors. They always opposed the Holy Spirit, and so do you!

I know how rebellious you are. You are impossible to deal with. While I am alive and still with you, you are rebelling against the Lord. How much more rebellious will you be after I die?

But you were loyal to the Lord your God and are still alive today.

The Lord also said to me, “I’ve seen these people, and they are impossible to deal with.

You’ve rebelled against the Lord as long as I’ve known you.

When they arrived these leaders said to the people of Gilead,

They’re doing just what they’ve done since I took them out of Egypt—leaving me and serving other gods.
