Didn’t I cry for the person whose days were difficult? Didn’t my soul grieve for the poor?

Those who sit at the gate gossip about me, and drunkards make up songs about me.

Why have we fasted if you are not aware of it? Why have we inflicted pain on ourselves if you don’t pay attention? Don’t you see that on the days you fast, you do what you want to do? You mistreat all your workers.

Is this the kind of fasting I have chosen? Should people humble themselves for ⌞only⌟ a day? Is fasting just bowing your head like a cattail and making your bed from sackcloth and ashes? Is this what you call fasting? Is this an acceptable day to the Lord?

“This will be a permanent law for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month both native Israelites and foreigners must humble themselves. They must do no work.

This is the most important worship festival there is for you. You will humble yourselves. It is a permanent law.

If it is a family that listens to you, allow your greeting to stand. But if it is not receptive, take back your greeting.

But I tell you this: Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.

If a peaceful person lives there, your greeting will be accepted. But if that’s not the case, your greeting will be rejected.
