When her mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her to his home, and she became his wife. Then she gave birth to a son. But the Lord considered David’s actions evil.

“When my food is in front of me, I sigh. I pour out my groaning like water.

At night God pierces my bones. My body doesn’t rest.

My skin turns dark and peels. My body burns with fever.

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away from helping me, so far away from the words of my groaning?

No healthy spot is left on my body because of your rage. There is no peace in my bones because of my sin.

I am numb and completely devastated. I roar because my heart’s in turmoil.

Let me hear ⌞sounds of⌟ joy and gladness. Let the bones that you have broken dance.

Have pity on me, O Lord, because I am weak. Heal me, O Lord, because my bones shake with terror.

A joyful heart is good medicine, but depression drains one’s strength.

Whoever covers over his sins does not prosper. Whoever confesses and abandons them receives compassion.

Your children have fainted. They lie sleeping at every street corner. They are like an antelope caught in a net. They experience the anger of the Lord, the fury of your God.

I was angry because of their sinful greed, so I punished them, hid ⌞from them⌟, and remained angry. But they continued to be sinful.

We all growl like bears. We coo like doves. We hope for justice, but there is none. We hope for salvation, but it’s far from us.

“Judah has been exiled after ⌞much⌟ suffering and harsh treatment. Its ⌞people⌟ live among the nations; they find no rest. Those who chased them caught up with them in places where there was no way out.

He has made my flesh and my skin waste away. He has broken my bones.

Even when I cry and call for help, he shuts out my prayer.

They don’t pray to me sincerely, even though they cry in their beds and make cuts on their bodies while praying for grain and new wine. They have turned against me.

They took the bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh. Then they fasted seven days.
