You threaten arrogant people, who are condemned and wander away from your commandments.

But they—our own ancestors—acted arrogantly. They became stubborn and wouldn’t obey your commands.

You warned them in order to bring them back to your teachings, but they became arrogant and would not obey your commandments. They sinned by not following your regulations. If anyone follows them, he will find life in them. But they gave you the cold shoulder, became impossible to deal with, and wouldn’t listen.

I wholeheartedly searched for you. Do not let me wander away from your commandments.

Wicked people have set a trap for me, but I have never wandered away from your guiding principles.

You reject all who wander away from your laws, because their lies mislead them.

Let arrogant people be put to shame because they lied about me, ⌞yet⌟ I reflect on your guiding principles.

Even though the Lord is high above, he sees humble people ⌞close up⌟, and he recognizes arrogant people from a distance.

Those who honor themselves will be humbled, but people who humble themselves will be honored.”

“I can guarantee that this tax collector went home with God’s approval, but the Pharisee didn’t. Everyone who honors himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be honored.”

Christ paid the price to free us from the curse that the laws in Moses’ Teachings bring by becoming cursed instead of us. Scripture says, “Everyone who is hung on a tree is cursed.”

Obey the Lord your God, and faithfully follow all his commands and laws that I am giving you today. If you don’t, all these curses will come to you and stay close to you:

I call on heaven and earth as witnesses today that I have offered you life or death, blessings or curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants will live.

But God shows us even more kindness. Scripture says, “God opposes arrogant people, but he is kind to humble people.”

Young people, in a similar way, place yourselves under the authority of spiritual leaders. Furthermore, all of you must serve each other with humility, because God opposes the arrogant but favors the humble.
