We have sinned, and so did our ancestors. We have done wrong. We are guilty.

If they come to their senses, are sorry for what they’ve done, and plead with you in the land where they are captives, saying, ‘We have sinned. We have done wrong. We have been wicked,’

“And now, our God, what can we say after all this? We have abandoned your commandments!

We have done you a great wrong. We haven’t obeyed the commandments, laws, or regulations that you gave us through your servant Moses.

But they—our own ancestors—acted arrogantly. They became stubborn and wouldn’t obey your commands.

Then they will not be like their ancestors, a stubborn and rebellious generation. Their hearts were not loyal. Their spirits were not faithful to God.

O Lord, we realize our wickedness and the wrongs done by our ancestors. We have sinned against you.

We must lie down in our shame and be covered by our disgrace. Ever since we were young, we and our ancestors have sinned against the Lord our God. We haven’t obeyed the Lord our God.

“But if they confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors—the treacherous things they did to oppose me—

“You’re just like your parents! You’re a bunch of sinners trying to make the Lord angry with Israel again.

Go ahead, finish what your ancestors started!
