Psalm 101:5

God's Word

I will destroy anyone who secretly slanders his neighbor. I will not tolerate anyone with a conceited look or arrogant heart.

Even though the Lord is high above, he sees humble people ⌞close up⌟, and he recognizes arrogant people from a distance.

The one who does not slander with his tongue, do evil to a friend, or bring disgrace on his neighbor.

You save humble people, but you bring down a conceited look.

You sit and talk against your own brother. You slander your own mother’s son.

“Never lie when you testify about your neighbor.

⌞The Lord continued,⌟ “Never spread false rumors. Don’t join forces with wicked people by giving false testimony.

Whoever conceals hatred has lying lips. Whoever spreads slander is a fool.

Whoever goes around as a gossip tells secrets. Do not associate with a person whose mouth is always open.

A conceited look and an arrogant attitude, which are the lamps of wicked people, are sins.

⌞As⌟ the north wind brings rain, so a whispering tongue brings angry looks.

A certain kind of person looks around arrogantly and is conceited.

The eyes of arrogant people will be humbled. High and mighty people will be brought down. On that day the Lord alone will be honored.

Some of your people slander. They want to kill people. People who live in you eat food sacrificed to idols at the worship sites on the hills, and they sin sexually.

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, will praise, honor, and give glory to the King of Heaven. Everything he does is true, his ways are right, and he can humiliate those who act arrogantly.

Never gossip. Never endanger your neighbor’s life. I am the Lord.

“I can guarantee that this tax collector went home with God’s approval, but the Pharisee didn’t. Everyone who honors himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be honored.”

Now, what I meant was that you should not associate with people who call themselves brothers or sisters in the Christian faith but live in sexual sin, are greedy, worship false gods, use abusive language, get drunk, or are dishonest. Don’t eat with such people.

Their wives must also be of good character. They must not be gossips, but they must control their tempers and be trustworthy in every way.

Tell older women to live their lives in a way that shows they are dedicated to God. Tell them not to be gossips or addicted to alcohol, but to be examples of virtue.

“Do not boast ⌞or⌟ let arrogance come out of your mouth because the Lord is a God of knowledge, and he weighs ⌞our⌟ actions.
