They eat food obtained through wrongdoing and drink wine obtained through violence.

Are all those troublemakers, those who devour my people as if they were devouring food, so ignorant that they do not call on the Lord?

A person eats well as a result of his speaking ability, but the appetite of treacherous people ⌞craves⌟ violence.

Food gained dishonestly tastes sweet to a person, but afterwards his mouth will be filled with gravel.

“Stolen waters are sweet, and food eaten in secret is tasty.”

How horrible it will be for those who string people along with lies and empty promises, whose lives are sinful.

How horrible it will be for those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness into light and light into darkness, who turn what is bitter into something sweet and what is sweet into something bitter.

“Beware of your neighbors. Don’t trust your relatives. Every relative cheats. Every neighbor goes around slandering.

This is what the Lord says about the prophets who mislead my people: When they have something to eat, they say, “All is well!” But they declare a holy war against those who don’t feed them.

The rich people in the city are violent. Those who live in the city speak lies, and their tongues speak deceitfully.

Their hands are skilled in doing evil. Officials ask for gifts. Judges accept bribes. Powerful people dictate what they want. So they scheme together.

Its officials are ⌞like⌟ roaring lions. Its judges are ⌞like⌟ wolves in the evening. They leave nothing to gnaw on for the morning.

“How horrible it will be for you, experts in Moses’ Teachings and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. You don’t enter it yourselves, and you don’t permit others to enter when they try.
