God's Word

Whoever covers over his sins does not prosper. Whoever confesses and abandons them receives compassion.

Confess to the Lord God of your ancestors what you have done, and do what he wants. Separate yourselves from the people of this land and from your foreign wives.”

Then Shecaniah, son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, interrupted by saying to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women who came from the people around us. However, there is still hope for Israel.

Those who were descendants of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood and confessed their sins as well as the wicked things their ancestors had done.

“If I have covered my disobedience like Adam and kept my sin to myself,

Each one sings in front of other people and says, ‘I sinned and did wrong instead of what was right, and it did me no good.

“But suppose such a person says to God, ‘I am guilty, I will stop my immoral behavior.

Create a clean heart in me, O God, and renew a faithful spirit within me.

Hate starts quarrels, but love covers every wrong.

Whoever forgives an offense seeks love, but whoever keeps bringing up the issue separates the closest of friends.

Let wicked people abandon their ways. Let evil people abandon their thoughts. Let them return to the Lord, and he will show compassion to them. Let them return to our God, because he will freely forgive them.

In spite of all this you say, ‘I’m innocent. God will turn his anger from me, because I haven’t sinned.’

“That is why, Your Majesty, my best advice is that you stop sinning, and do what is right. Stop committing the same errors, and have pity on the poor. Maybe you can prolong your prosperity.”

“So if you are guilty of any of these sins, you must confess it.

God saw what they did. He saw that they turned from their wicked ways. So God reconsidered his threat to destroy them, and he didn’t do it.

Instead, I spread the message that I first told to the ⌞Jewish⌟ people in Damascus and Jerusalem and throughout the whole country of Judea. I spread the same message to non-Jewish people. Both groups were expected to change the way they thought and acted and to turn to God. I told them to do things that prove they had changed their lives.

The people of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do to us whatever you think is right. But please rescue us today!”

Samuel came to Saul, who said, “The Lord bless you. I carried out the Lord’s instructions.”

Then Saul told Samuel, “I have sinned by not following the Lord’s command or your instructions. I was afraid of the people and listened to them.

Saul replied, “I have sinned! Now please honor me in front of the leaders of my people and in front of Israel. Come back with me, and let me worship the Lord your God.”
