“And now, brothers, I know that like your rulers you didn’t know what you were doing.

I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that I often planned to visit you. However, until now I have been kept from doing so. What I want is to enjoy some of the results of working among you as I have also enjoyed the results of working among the rest of the nations.

God has not rejected his people whom he knew long ago. Don’t you know what Elijah says in the Scripture passage when he complains to God about Israel? He says,

Of course we are human, but we don’t fight like humans.

I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live I live by believing in God’s Son, who loved me and took the punishment for my sins.

I find it hard to choose between the two. I would like to leave this life and be with Christ. That’s by far the better choice.

But for your sake it’s better that I remain in this life.

I want you to know how hard I work for you, for the people of Laodicea, and for people I have never met.

That way you won’t be guided by sinful human desires as you live the rest of your lives on earth. Instead, you will be guided by what God wants you to do.
