Your arrogance has deceived you. You live on rocky cliffs. You make your home up high. You say to yourself, ‘No one can bring me down to earth.’

So Esau, who was also known as Edom, lived in the mountains of Seir.

Amaziah killed 10,000 Edomites in the Dead Sea region and took the city of Sela in battle. He gave it the name Joktheel, which is still its name today.

Amaziah courageously led his troops. When he came to the Dead Sea region, he killed 10,000 men from Seir.

The Judeans captured another 10,000 alive, took them to the top of a cliff, and threw them off the top of the cliff so that they were dismembered.

Pride precedes a disaster, and an arrogant attitude precedes a fall.

Before destruction a person’s heart is arrogant, but humility comes before honor.

“ ‘I’m against you, Jerusalem. You are the city that is in the valley and on the rock in the plain,’ ” declares the Lord. “ ‘But you ask, “Who can attack us? Who can enter our places of refuge?”

“ ‘This is what the Lord says: Don’t deceive yourselves by thinking that the Babylonians will leave you. They will not leave you.

People of Moab, abandon your cities. Live among the cliffs. Be like doves that make their nests at the entrance of a cave.

You have frightened other people. Your arrogance has deceived you. You live on rocky cliffs and occupy the highest places in the hills. Even though you build your nest as high as an eagle, I will bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.

Why do you brag about your valleys, your fertile valleys, you unfaithful people? You trust your treasures. You think, “Who would attack me?”

You traded far and wide. You learned to be violent, and you sinned. So I threw you down from God’s mountain in disgrace. The guardian angel forced you out from the fiery stones.

“The descendants of Esau may say, ‘We have been beaten down, but we will rebuild the ruins.’ “Yet, this is what the Lord of Armies says: They may rebuild, but I will tear it down. They will be called ‘the Wicked Land’ and ‘the people with whom the Lord is always angry.’
