“You must not pollute the land where you live. Murder is what pollutes the land. The land where a murder was committed can never make peace with the Lord except through the death of the murderer.

The Lord asked, “What have you done? Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground.

Whoever sheds human blood, by humans his blood will be shed, because in the image of God, God made humans.

The Lord is going to come out from his dwelling place to punish those who live on earth for their sins. The earth will uncover the blood shed on it and will no longer cover up its dead bodies.

First, I will have them pay twice as much for their wickedness and their sin, because they have polluted my land. They have filled my property with the lifeless statues of their detestable and disgusting idols.”

But know for certain that if you put me to death, you, this city, and the people living in it will be guilty of killing an innocent person. The Lord has certainly sent me to speak all these things to you.”

The land has become unclean. I will punish it for its sins. The land will vomit out those who live in it.

But now many nations gather against you. They say, “Let’s dishonor Zion and gloat over it.”

“An accused murderer who has fled to a city of refuge must never go back and live on his own land before the death of the high priest. Don’t accept a cash payment to allow him to do this.

That way, innocent people won’t be killed in the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you won’t be guilty of murder.

They must have no pity on him. The guilt of murdering an innocent person must be removed from Israel. Then things will go well for Israel.

never leave his dead body hung on a pole overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone whose body is hung on a pole is cursed by God. The land that the Lord your God is giving you must never become unclean.

God did this so that the bloody violence committed against Jerubbaal’s 70 sons would happen to Abimelech and citizens of Shechem. Citizens of Shechem had helped Abimelech execute his brothers.
