God's Word

The tribes of Reuben and Gad had a large number of livestock. They saw that the regions of Jazer and Gilead were a good place for livestock.

Abram was very rich because he had livestock, silver, and gold.

Lot, who had been traveling with Abram, also had his own sheep, cattle, and tents.

Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben [Here’s My Son], because she said, “Certainly, the Lord has seen my misery; now my husband will love me!”

We have come to live in this land for a while. The famine is so severe in Canaan that there’s no pasture for our flocks. So please let us live in Goshen.”

They crossed the Jordan River and camped at Aroer, south of the city in the middle of the valley. Then they went to Gad and to Jazer.

They went to Gilead and to Tahtim Hodshi and then to Dan Jaan and around toward Sidon.

In the days of King Hezekiah of Judah, the men listed here knocked down tents and killed the Meunites. They claimed the Meunites for God and destroyed them. (Even today no Meunites live there.) They lived in that land in place of the Meunites in order to have pasture for their flocks.

Many other people also went with them, along with large numbers of sheep, goats, and cattle.

“This is what the Lord says about the palace of the king of Judah: This palace is like Gilead to me, like the top of Lebanon. I will certainly turn it into a desert, into cities that no one lives in.

I will cry for you as Jazer cries. I will cry for you, grapevines of Sibmah. Your branches ⌞once⌟ spread as far as the sea, and they reached as far as the sea of Jazer. The destroyer will destroy your ripened fruits and your grapes.

I will bring the people of Israel back to their pastures. They will eat on Mount Carmel and Mount Bashan. They will eat until they are full on the mountains of Ephraim and Gilead.

Isn’t there medicine in Gilead? Aren’t there doctors there? Then why hasn’t the health of my dear people been restored?

With your shepherd’s staff, take care of your people, the sheep that belong to you. They live alone in the woods, in fertile pastures. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead like before.

After Moses sent spies to Jazer, the Israelites captured its cities and villages and forced out the Amorites who were there.

So they came to Moses, the priest Eleazar, and the leaders of the community, and said to them,

Our children, our wives, our livestock, and all our other animals will stay here in the cities of Gilead.

“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,

Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,

They chose the best land for themselves. Indeed, a commander’s piece of land was reserved for them. They were leaders of the people and did for Israel what the Lord considers fair and honorable.”

Their territory included Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half of Ammon as far as Aroer, which is by Rabbah.

The Israelites sent Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar, to the tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of the tribe of Manasseh in Gilead.

So the tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of the tribe of Manasseh left the rest of the Israelites at Shiloh in Canaan. They returned to Gilead. This was their own possession which they had captured as the Lord had instructed them through Moses.

Why did you sit between the saddlebags? Was it to listen to the shepherds playing their flutes? Reuben’s divisions of important men had second thoughts.
