May nations serve you. May people bow down to you. Be the master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed. May those who bless you be blessed.”

Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the country of Edom.

He put troops everywhere in Edom, and all the Edomites were David’s subjects. Everywhere David went, the Lord gave him victories.

The Lord raised up Hadad the Edomite as a rival to Solomon. Hadad was from the Edomite royal family.

When David had conquered Edom, Joab, the commander of the army, went to bury those killed in battle and killed every male in Edom.

O God, you have rejected us. You have broken down our defenses. You have been angry. Restore us!

When my sword is covered ⌞with blood⌟ in the heavens, it will fall on Edom and on the people I’ve claimed for destruction.

Who is this coming from Bozrah in Edom with his clothes stained bright red? Who is this dressed in splendor, going forward with great strength? “It is I, the Lord. I am coming to announce my victory. I am powerful enough to save ⌞you⌟.”

On that day I will set up David’s fallen tent. I will repair the holes in it. I will restore its ruined places. I will rebuild them as they were a long time ago.

They will capture the few survivors of Edom and all the other nations that were under my authority, declares the Lord, who will do these things.

“Edom, I will make you the smallest of nations. Others will despise you.

But the Edomites answered, “You may not pass through our country. If you try, we’ll come out and attack you.”

He will rule from Jacob and destroy whoever is left in their cities.”
