and criticized God and Moses. They said, “Why did you make us leave Egypt—just to let us die in the desert? There’s no bread or water, and we can’t stand this awful food!”

God places lonely people in families. He leads prisoners out of prison into productive lives, but rebellious people must live in an unproductive land.

They spoke against God by saying, “Can God prepare a banquet in the desert?

They said to Moses, “Did you bring us out into the desert to die because there were no graves in Egypt? Look what you’ve done by bringing us out of Egypt!

The people complained about Moses by asking, “What are we supposed to drink?”

When the Israelites saw it, they asked each other, “What is this?” because they didn’t know what it was. Moses said to them, “It’s the food the Lord has given you to eat.

The Israelites called the food manna. It was like coriander seeds. It was white and tasted like wafers made with honey.

One who is full despises honey, but to one who is hungry, even bitter food tastes sweet.

“ ‘But they rebelled against me. They didn’t live by my laws, and they didn’t obey my rules and follow them. If people obey them, they will live. They dishonored the days to worship me. So I was going to pour out my fury on them and unleash my anger on them in the desert.

but for a whole month, until it comes out of their ears and they’re sick of it. This is because they rejected the Lord who is here among them and cried in front of him, asking, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’ ”

The next day the whole community of Israel complained to Moses and Aaron. They said, “You have killed the Lord’s people.”

The Israelites said to Moses, “Now we’re going to die! We’re lost! We’re all lost!

We shouldn’t put the Lord  to the test as some of them did. They were killed by snakes.
